It includes descriptions of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa; as well as techniques for growing, controlling and treating diseases caused by these organisms. Within the scope of this course are units which discuss how the diseases are diagnosed, and finally, epidemiology and communicability of individual diseases grouped by portals of entry. Prevention and infection control issues as well as current issues surrounding infectious disease may also be discussed.

  Origin Notes: ACC

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:

 I.      Define related terminology.
II.     Provide historical reference for at least six of the major advances in microbiological technology.
III.    Describe characteristics of the major categories of microbes and correctly classify them as to prokaryotes or eucaryotes.
IV.     Identify and describe nutritional and growth requirements for the microbes; describe the methods by which the organisms are identified within a laboratory.
 V.      Describe bacterial genetics as to function, methods of DNA transfers, and relate these characteristics to ability of organisms to cause disease.
VI.     Describe the characteristics of organisms which enable them to cause disease.
VII.    Describe physical and chemical ways that microorganisms are controlled; this includes chemotherapeutics such as antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral agents.
VIII.   Describe the body's defenses and relate the role of the immune system in this process; both with the use of vaccines and with use of immunoglobins.
IX.     Define and describe "epidemiology" and the "communicability" as they relate to infectious disease.

XI.     Describe and discuss diseases that enter the body through the respiratory portal of entry and relate possible infection control techniques that pertain to this portal.
XII.    Describe and discuss diseases that enter the body through the digestive tract and relate possible infection control techniques that pertain to this portal.
XIII.   Describe and discuss diseases of direct contact (genitourinary tract) and relate possible infection control techniques that pertain to this portal.
XIV.    Describe and discuss diseases that enter the skin, either intact skin or by means of arthropod bites.
XV.     Describe and discuss diseases that enter intact in the skin either by animal bites or iatrogenically and relate control techniques that pertain to this portal.
