Course Description: | Prepare the care provider to care for the older adult by understanding how normal aging affects a person physiologically, psychosocially, and culturally. The learner will be introduced to current theories on aging, nutritional needs, safety issues, community resources, and health care guidelines for the older adult. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Explore the trends in the population of older adults in the United States today.
2. Identify current gerontological theories.
3. Recognize physiological, psychosocial, and cultural needs that occur with aging.
4. Identify community resources available to the older adult in rural and urban areas.
5. Describe Medicare and Medicaid benefits for the older adult.
6. Identify health care guidelines for the older adult to include immunizations, and health care screenings.
7. Define elder abuse and appropriate reporting guidelines.
8. Recognize memory problems and dementia in the older adult with appropriate interventions.
9. Identify common nutritional problems in the older adult and appropriate interventions.
10. Identify safety measures needed in caring for the older adult in varied settings.
11. Describe palliative care goals and assisting the older adult during the dying process.
