Course Description: | Teaches the duties associated with the practice of venipuncture, capillary puncture, and special collection procedures. Students will have experience with quality control, infection control and safety procedures as well as laboratory computer systems. Students successfully completing this course may apply for a National Phlebotomy Registry Examination. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Demonstrates entry level phlebotomy skills using national standards.
2. Identify the importance of phlebotomy and the scope of practice of the phlebotomist.
3. Apply OSHA standards in all areas of healthcare.
4. Apply quality of care standards and procedures to ensure patient safety.
5. Distinguish all areas of the laboratory and other hospital department areas.
6. Apply all the ethical, legal, and HIPAA aspects of a phlebotomist.
7. Demonstrate a knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology as it relates to laboratory procedures.
8. Recall the history of phlebotomy.
