  Long Title:Introduction to Sports Medicine
  Course Description:Introduces students to the field of sports medicine. This includes career opportunities, education and certification requirements for a variety of sports medicine related careers. The course requires 30 observation hours under the supervision of a credentialed sports medicine professional to give students hands on learning opportunities and provide a better understanding of what is required of sports medicine professionals.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Describe the field of Sports Medicine, its history, how it functions, who it serves and who makes up the sports medicine team.
 2. Differentiate the requirements to practice in a variety of sports medicine professions, including but not limited to athletic training,
        physical therapy, occupational therapy and personal training.
 3. Articulate the importance and perform applicable components of the pre-participation physical examination (Height, Weight, Vision, Blood Pressure,
        Pulse, Cardio-Respiratory Fitness, Muscular Strength, Power, Endurance, Flexibility, Posture, Gait, and Body Composition).
 4. Design a basic strength and conditioning program for athletic activities.
 5. Identify how pharmacological aids would be helpful to an athlete and in what situations they may be appropriate for use.
 6. Recognize when environmental conditions may become a health hazard and how to prescribe injury preventive measures in regard to these conditions.
 7. Recognize and appropriately respond to an athletic emergency.
 8. Implement an emergency action plan to ensure as positive an outcome as possible in the event of an athletic emergency.
 9. Establish an understanding of the laws and safety issues present in sports medicine.
 10. Identify the basic components of an athletic nutritional/diet plan.
 11. Demonstrate an understanding of the profession in the sports medicine industry that they may like to pursue and have the ability
        adjust their college course work accordingly.
