  Course Description:Teaches the principles, procedures, and skills needed to develop and maintain a competent staff. Learn to apply an easy, four-step training method to all hospitality functional areas.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Outline the basic steps in planning, implementing and evaluating training programs.
 II.     Explain basic management procedures for recruiting and selecting job applicants for vacant positions.
 III.    Outline basic components of a new employee orientation program.
 IV.     Outline guidelines for training.
 V.      Identify group training methods and determine how and when they should be used.
 VI.     Explain general principles for providing effective group leadership.
 VII.    Establish training objectives and design training plans and lessons.
 VIII.   Develop job lists, job breakdowns, job descriptions, and job performance standards.
 IX.     Apply basic learning principles to adult training.
 X       Detail procedures for developing and implementing individualized training methods, particularly for on-the-job training and learner controlled instruction programs.
 XI.     Explain the importance of evaluation and describe training plans and lessons.
 XII.    Name four basic types of communication and explain how to overcome obstacles to effective communications.
 XIII.   Demonstrate a basic understanding of attitudes, norms, behavior, perceptions and sanctions as they relate to training programs.
 XIV.    Describe how formal and informal work groups develop and operate and how they are affected by competition and conflict.
 XV.     Discuss team-building strategies, the development of cooperative relationships, and the conduct of effective informational and problem-solving meetings.
 XVI.    Differentiate between coaching and counseling and identify techniques for conducting coaching and counseling sessions.
 XVII.   Outline basic approaches which can be used to conduct performance reviews and recognize common problems in such reviews.
 XVIII.  Identify sources of information which trainers can use.
 XIX.    Outline an action plan that illustrates, in sequence, the steps to be taken in training plan development and implementation.
