  Course Description:Utilizes an understanding of the principles and elements of landscape design as the basis of an exploration of the selection of landscape materials, features and layouts to create functional landscape designs; introduces grading plan development and the rendering of hardscape construction details. Students present their plans to a client or review panel.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Describe the principles of xeriscape: planning & design, soil analysis, appropriate plant selections, zone plantings, practical turf area, efficient irrigation, mulches, appropriate maintenance, etc.
 2. Interpret a layout plan, grading plan, planting plan, construction details.
 3. Demonstrate an understanding of the designers role as a sales professional (i.e. in the end the designer’s job is to sell jobs to clients).
 4. Evaluate a standard questionnaire that will clarify the client's needs and wants when developing a landscape design proposal.
 5. Measure, locate, and document the site features that will impact a landscape plan for a site.
 6. Use an evaluation of a client’s current landscape as the basis for a proposed landscape design that uses sustainable landscaping criteria.
 7. Prepare a preliminary construction budget.
 8. Prepare a simple landscape plan and present/defend that plan during peer and instructor reviews.
 9. Create a site-appropriate landscape master plan that demonstrates the ability to creatively apply the elements and principles of landscape design (form, space, line, color, shape, texture, functionality, value, microclimate, unity, emphasis/focal point, framing, balance, proportion/scale, contrast, movement, rhythm/pattern, variety, and harmony) to plant choice, planting design, and the design and placement of constructed elements.
 10. Identify site and design issues/features that may require special permitting or other actions on the designer's part to comply with  federal, state, and municipal codes; home owner association covenants; utilities and other easements or rights-of-way on a site so that development can be completed.
 11. Articulate the reasons to incorporate low impact design for stormwater management, xeriscaping, solar compatible and energy conserving landscaping, green building, native plants, wildlife habitat, outside living spaces into a landscape.
 12. Demonstrates an understanding of the ecological functions of a landscape and design how to design a landscape that preserves or enhances ecological functionality.
