Course Description: | Familiarizes students with the safe handling of pesticides used in horticulture and the laws and regulations that govern all facets of pesticide use in Colorado. Can be used as preparation for completing the Colorado Department of Agriculture’s pesticide licensure exams |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Demonstrate familiarity with the details of pesticide licensure requirements and state and
federal laws regulating pesticide licensure and applications.
2. Demonstrate the ability to interpret pesticide labeling and safety documents.
3. Explain pesticide resistance concerns and how to minimize the occurrence of pesticide resistant pest populations.
4. Demonstrate familiarity with hazard communications standards in the workplace and with legal obligations in regards to
recording and reporting pesticide stores and applications.
5. Explain procedures for making pesticide applications, selecting personal protective equipment, spill cleanup and reporting,
pesticide transportation, service container labeling, etc.
6. Demonstrate the ability to calibrate application equipment and an understanding of the purpose of pesticide equipment calibration.
7. Calculate the correct amount of pesticide concentrate to make a tank mix and the correct amount of tank mix
needed for a pesticide application.
8. Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of properly and uniformly distributing a pesticide during an application.
9. Identify pesticide families, types, formulations, adjuvants and additives and attributes of various types of pesticide families,
types, formulations, adjuvants and additives (i.e. mix compatibility, mode of action, volatility, environmental fate, etc.).
10. Demonstrate an understanding of environmentally cognizant pesticide applications (i.e. understands the potential impacts of
pesticides in the environment and of the environment on pesticide applications).
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Laws, regulations, training requirements, and licensure governing the use of pesticides
II. Reading and understanding pesticide labels and associated safety/use documents.
III. Pesticides families, types, formulations, adjuvants and additives and their use.
IV. Employee and Community health concerns communications (hazard communication and worker protection,
first responder protection, first aid for exposure victims,
V. Environmental Safety and pesticide use (IPM basics, environmental influences on pesticide applications,
spill notification and cleanup, etc.)
VI. Record keeping requirements for pesticide storage and applications
VII. Application equipment calibration and calculating application mixtures and rates.
