  Course Description:Explores the priniples and elements of design. The student learns about form, spatial and materials compostition, and environmentally and architecturally responsive design. Students complete a set of landscape design documents for an actual or fictional client.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Define/restate a client needs from an oral interview of a landscape client. (I)
 II.     Develop a questionnaire to for use during client interviews.(I)
 III.    Describe the contents of, or write a proposal for landscape design services.(I)
 IV.     Accurately measure and record the dimensions of a landscape site using direct measurement, baseline measurement, and triangulation. (II)
 V.      Adequately document the features of a site that will impact the landscape design. (II)
 VI.     Properly locate structures and existing plant materials on a base map of the landscape site. (II)
 VII.    Draw a complete and accurate base map and plot plan of the landscape site. (II)
 VIII.   Define form composition (III)
 IX.     Differentiate and describe the more common design themes (for example: curvilinear, circular, rectangular, diagonal etc.) (III)
 X       Discuss the process of selecting an appropriate design theme for a situation.(III)
 XI.     Discuss the physical attributes of the various design themes.(III)
 XII.    Discuss the psychological perception, of the various design themes, by users.(III)
 XIII.   Describe general guidelines for the usage of various design themes. (III)
 XIV.    Define spatial composition. (IV)
 XV.     Discuss the various elements of spatial composition.(IV)
 XVI.    Discuss the manipulation of spatial composition and framing via grading, screening, the direction of traffic circulation, the creation of focal points, and the placement of overhead structures. (IV)
 XVII.   Define materials composition. (V)
 XVIII.  Discuss the visual, design, construction and maintenance attributes of various construction materials, including Wood, Brick, Tile, Gravel, and Deciduous and evergreen plant material. (V)
 XIX.    Select materials appropriate for a given use based upon their attributes. (V)
 XX      Demonstrate the proper placement of structural design elements to modify the site environment/microclimate in specified ways. (VI)
 XXI.    Discuss how various materials will change the surrounding microclimate.(VI)
 XXII.   Discuss the selection of structural and plant materials for appropriateness of maintenance and environment. (VI)
 XXIII.  Select plant materials appropriate to the region and microclimate and properly place them in the landscape design. (VI)
 XXIV.   Discuss the use of turf and native plants in a landscape. (VI)
 XXV.    Discuss how the architectural elements of the home will affect materials composition, spatial composition, and form composition in the landscape.(VII)
 XXVI.   Discuss the relationship between the interior of the home and the landscape design. (VII)
 XXVII.  Identify important architectural elements, forms, etc that should be manipulated to form pleasing landscapes.(VII)
 XXVIII. Develop a character palette for a residence. (VII
