  Course Description:Focuses on the ability of the student to apply classroom knowledge in a clinical setting, practice professionalism, gain insight into the functions of the department and understand the relationship of health records to the facility as a whole. Emphasis is on the ability to act independently, complete assigned projects and demonstrate a good understanding of health information management concepts.

       Analyze health information services and construct a systematic flow or health information for the facility and the department.
       Develop, apply and evaluate policies and procedures for health information services/functions.
       Identify, retrieve, organize and display data for patient care evaluation, research projects and educational programs.
       Develop and conduct in service training activities.
       Evaluate procedures for classifying, coding and indexing diagnoses, procedures, and symptoms.
       Identify and describe department resources, training, processes and workflow.
       Participate in institution-wide committees that rely on medical records including facility and department QI programs.
       Understand the legal and regulatory environment that impacts health care facilities and health information departments.
       Describe the procedures for hiring, evaluating, disciplining and terminating personnel.
       Describe the computerization of department functions.
       Collect, compute, analyze, interpret and present statistical data related to health care services.
       Describe the transcription process and the quality control procedures in place.
       Complete department projects that are assigned.
