Course Description: | Covers medical necessity and coding issues using ICD and CPT coding principles. Students should already possess a fundamental understanding of the CPT, ICD and HCPCS coding principle. Intensive coding application will be achieved through the use of medical records, case studies, and scenarios. DRGs, APCs, RUGs, RBRVs, and the Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) will also be covered in this class. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. The student will develop industry-valued coding knowledge and skills.
2. Use and maintain electronic applications and work processes to support clinical classification and coding.
3. Apply diagnosis/procedure codes using ICD.
4. Apply procedure codes using CPT/HCPCS.
5. Ensure accuracy of diagnostic/procedural groupings such as DRG, APC.
6. Adhere to current regulations and established guidelines in code assignment
7. Validate coding accuracy using clinical information found in the health record.
8. Use and maintain applications and processes to support other clinical classification and nomenclature systems (such as ICD, SNOMED)
9. Resolve discrepancies between coded data and supporting documentation.
