STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Describe the difference between vocabulary, terminology and classification systems
2. Describe the structure, purpose and scope of each system and the impacts in healthcare
3. Describe the terminology and classifications commonly utilized for administrative and statistical reporting
4. Identify the basic characteristics, conventions, principles of each terminology and classification system
5. Describe the specialty and international systems organization and structure
6. Define data sets and data interchange standards for healthcare (i.e. OASIS, HEDIS, UHDDS, SNOMED)and their application to diagnosis/procedure codes)
7. Describe the use of vocabulary, terminology and classification systems in the electronic health record (EHR)
8. Describe the role of the Unified medical Language System (UMLS) database
9. Apply policies and procedures to ensure the accuracy and integrity of health data (Data and data sources for databases)
10. Identify and use secondary data sources; validate the reliability and accuracy of secondary data sources
11. Analyze current regulations and established guidelines in clinical classification systems (i.e. UHDDS guidelines)
