Course Description: | Provides an advanced study of ICD coding conventions and principles. DRG and case mix logic along with regulations regarding their use in conjunction with optimization and compliance issues will be discussed. CPT/HCPCS in both the hospital-based outpatient and physician office settings will be studied. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Assign diagnostic/procedure codes using ICD, CPT, HCPCS, and other coding systems.
2. Abstract information from patient records for research, reimbursement, disease/procedure/physician indices, registries, QA/UR/RM, and other uses.
3. Interpret the content of the medical record in order to assign diagnostic and procedure codes using the ICD coding system.
4. Apply Diagnostic/procedural groupings; Evaluate the accuracy of the Diagnostic/procedural groupings.
5. Develop appropriate physician queries to resolve data and coding discrepancies (V.D.2)
6. Determine accuracy of computer assisted coding assignment and recommend corrective action.
7. Identify quality control techniques and methods related to coding and abstracting services.
8. Utilize and understand various encoding software.
9. Analyze the documentation in the health record to ensure it supports the diagnosis and reflects the patient’s progress, clinical findings, and discharge status.
10. Perform edit checks to monitor data accuracy.
11. Identify potential abuse or fraudulent trends through data analysis)
12. Identify and use the outpatient reimbursement systems including the use of chargemasters and superbills.
13. Analyze Policies and Procedures to ensure organizational compliance with regulations and standards.
