  Course Description:Introduces the ICD coding classification system and provides a basic understanding of ICD structure, conventions and principles utilized in code assignment. The student will be introduced to the official coding guidelines. They will apply knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology in the assignment of diagnostic and procedural codes.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES
 
 1. Explain the content of the ICD coding system.
 2. Interpret the content of the patient health care record in order to assign diagnostic and procedure codes using the ICD coding system;
    apply diagnostic and procedure coding conventions in code assignment.
 3. Evaluate documentation to support diagnoses, tests and treatment modalities.
 4. Perform edit checks to monitor data accuracy.
 5. Identify quality control techniques and methods related to coding.
 6. Describe the Uniform Hospital Discharge Data Set and apply the guidelines to diagnosis and procedure code assignment.
 7. Identify neoplasms based on ICD Neoplasm Table and an understanding of morphology codes.
 8. Assign codes according to government and organizational regulations and accreditation standards.
