Course Description: | Introduces the electronic health record (EHR)\components and health informatics including infrastructure, privacy, security and legal implications. Federal involvement and its impact on information technology regarding health data will be discussed. Students will study the roles and relationships, in the transformation of data into meaningful information, through research, vital statistics and epidemiology. Data quality, integrity, collection, access, and retention will also be emphasized. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES
1. Demonstrate how the field of Health Care Informatics/EHRs impact Health Information Management and its functions.
2. Explain the meaning of common health information technology terminology.
3. Explain the role of the federal government in the adoption and use of electronic health records.
4. Describe the components of an electronic health record, internet technologies (software utilization), archival and retrieval systems for
patient information, and health information system infrastructure.
5. Differentiate the different types of health records, their content and their documentation guidelines.
6. Identify the purposes and methods related to record analysis, including quantitative, qualitative and legal.
7. Describe the functions and evolving role of the Health Information Management (HIM) departments/professionals in transforming
data into meaningful information.
8. Demonstrate how data is collected and protected in a health information system.
9. Describe the structure and use of healthcare data, the concepts of data integrity and governance, and the importance of
addressing needs of multi-users.
10. Identify the major data sets, standards, classifications and terminologies, and their scope/uses.
11. Perform the collection of health care data for use with data analytics, in decision making (decision support), reporting
(report generation technologies) and presentation (basic descriptive, institutional & healthcare statistics).
