  Course Description:Examines the theory of Psychoneuroimmunology as the interrelationship of the body-mind connection and the impact of stress on health. Explores the physiological and psychological interaction between the central nervous system, the immune system, and the endocrine system and how they interact with each other to impact one’s overall state of health in creating both illness & wellness. Introduces new fields of thought that are impacting views on health as well as medical education and training.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 
 1. Describe the general anatomy and basic interactive functions between the nervous system, the immune system and the endocrine system
 2. Discuss the historical findings and key figures that led to the discovery of Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI)
 3. Review examples of contemporary writings that have led to greater advancement in understanding the mind-body connection to health
 4. Examine the concept of how emotions reside throughout in the body; not just in the mind
 5. Differentiate the emotions involved with a healthy immune system versus a compromised immune system and the impact on health
 6. Discuss how thoughts and beliefs influence our immune system and overall state of health
 7. Identify how stress and the stress response system can affect physiological and psychological health
 8. Introduce the basic definition and general concept of epigenetics and its interconnected relationship to PNI
 9. Examine views on how health-related habits can positively or negatively influence the functioning of the immune system and the impact of mindfulness techniques on health
