Course Description: | Introduces holistic philosophy, theory, and practice and how it integrates with the art and science of caring and healing. The course involves conscious application of self-responsibility, caring, human development, stress, reduction life styling, communication, problem solving, teaching/learning, leadership and change. These topics are approached holistically, through preventative, nurturing and generative activities in order to help clients move toward optimal wellness. Application of holistic health concepts to everyday practice in self-wellness, self-care, and self-responsibility is encouraged. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Introduce the concepts of holism, holistic health and self -healing
2. Discuss the basic principles of a holistic approach to health
3. Compare and contrast the differences between healing and curing
4. Identify the different dimensions of health and optimal wellness
5. Experience various whole person wellness assessments
6. Discuss the role of self-awareness, self-responsibility and self-care and their relationship to health and disease
7. Describe and discuss the holistic paradigm of medicine and how it differs from the traditional allopathic model of medicine
8. Identify the benefits of various healing modalities including the relaxation response and meditation, journaling, humor,
gratitude, inspirational reading and random acts of kindness
9. Create and implement a wellness program
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Introduction of holism and holistic health definitions and concepts
II. Discuss the mind body connection
III. Discussion of self-healing
IV. Introduction of the basic principles of a holistic approach to health
V. Discussion of self-awareness, self-responsibility and self-care and how they relate to disease and health
VI. Explain the dimensions of holistic health
VII. Introduce and experience four different health awareness assessments
VIII. Compare and contrast healing vs. curing using the story of Jean Watson
IX. Introduce journaling including how to journal, ideas for journaling and the benefits of journaling
X. Introduce the Relaxation response, demonstrate how to do it and discuss the health benefits of a regular practice using the relaxation response
XI. Describe and discuss the holistic paradigm of medicine and how it differs from the traditional allopathic model of medicine
XII. Students create and implement a wellness program
