Course Description: | Explains the historical & cultural uses of aromatherapy\essential oils and the distillation process up through modern times. Basic botany will be addressed. Examinations of how the essential oils interact with human physiology will be studied, along with modern research/clinical studies addressing the efficacy of essential oils. Students will learn enhanced blending techniques for making aromatic perfumes as well as therapeutic blends and examine the role of the aromatherapist using essential oils and working with clients. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Discuss aromatherapy as it relates to the various dimensions of health and body systems
2. Assess and evaluate the essential oils most appropriate for addressing the dimensions of health and body systems
3. Describe and distinguish different application methods of oils by practitioners
4. Examine and interpret the effects of essentials oils on body systems
5. Recognize and understand the process of blending different oils for various health-related issues to better balance body, mind and spirit
6. Identify the most important essential oils and their profiles
7. Develop a basic understanding of botany and how it relates to essential oils
8. Perform and demonstrate hands-on labs using essential oils and therapeutic blending
9. Explain the role and code of ethics for the aromatherapist

IV. Research on the impact on health using essential oils
V. Essential oil chemistry and pharmacology

VII. Safety precautions & contraindications in using essential oils
VIII. Review of essential oil profiles
IX. Weekly hands-on labs to reinforce the understanding of the healing actions of essential oils, appropriate dilution ratios, blending techniques and safe use of essential oils
X. Therapeutic blends, methods of administration, and massage
XI. Essential oils and their therapeutic value to a variety of body systems and basic physiology
XII. Ethics and the role of the aromatherapist
