Course Description: | Presents part of a parent enrichment program that cultivates love, compassion, respect and well being for infants and children through touch. Infant massage promotes positive interaction between caregiver and infant using systematic manual manipulations of soft tissues of the body, incorporating movements such as rubbing, pressing and rolling for therapeutic purposes. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Identify the benefits of infant massage as they relate to both infant/child and the parent/caregiver.
II. Accurately perform the basic parent-infant massage stroke techniques and sequence.
III. Identify the six states of awareness in a newborn and understand which state is optimal for receiving massage.
IV. Describe the conditional relaxation response technique and how it is used in helping an infant/child relax.
V. Define and evaluate muscle tone as to normal, hypotonic and hypertonic and demonstrate massage strokes to be used.
VI. Define the elements of attachment and bonding and how it interfaces with infant massage.
