STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Inspect (pre-trip) and grease a backhoe. The student will be able to determine grade and maintain grade, replace normal wear parts (cutting edge and teeth), operate the backhoe safely and efficiently on uneven terrain. This knowledge will be shown by verbal questions and answers, and a performance test
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Backhoe and job site safety, trench safety
II. Grading use of transit and hand held sight glass
III. Understanding grade and maintaining grade
IV. Walk around inspection and grease machine
V. Above ground exercise.
VI. Dig trench and maintain grade supervised with help on ground.
VII. Parallel and perpendicular locates.
VIII. Replace cutting edge and bucket teeth
IX. Dig a trench 4 feet below benchmark maintaining OSHA standards. Prepare a sub-base and maintain grade. Backfill trenches, wheel compact, and back drag.
X Dig on an uneven surface, how to position, set up, and operates on a slope and uneven terrain.
XI. Using backhoe, load a truck to capacity.
XII. Cross a trench with the backhoe, set up on open trench and safety procedures.
