Course Description: | Designed for operators with little or no experience in operating a backhoe. Covers performing pre-trip inspection, greasing and lubing equipment, nomenclature, and identifying and understanding all controls. Includes use of front-end loader to load dirt, using backhoe attachment to dig trenches of specific depth and length, replacing a cutting edge, and OSHA and industry standards of open excavations. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. After completing 40 hours of Level I Backhoe the student will be able to:
II. Test the safety rules related to the backhoe and the safety rules related to the job site.
III. Identify each and every component and attachments to the backhoe.
IV. Point to and identify the nomenclature of the backhoe to include all controls of this unit.
V. Demonstrate the ability to:
A. Perform a daily inspection.
B. Start, warm up, check all gauges, check all controls to ensure that everything is working properly, and to do a proper shut down of the machine.
C. Set up properly; dig a trench the width of the backhoe bucket, approximately four feet deep and no less than forty feet long, and to be able to carry a straight line while excavating a trench.
D. Backfill and back drag techniques.
E. Load a truck using either the loader bucket or the backhoe.
F. Replace the cutting edge when needed.
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Backhoe and job site, OSHA and industry safety standards
II. Basic hydraulic, fuel system, glow plug, block heater, air intake system
III. Use walk around sheets to perform inspections, identification of parts and components to include safety features of individual equipment
IV. Backhoe set-up and control identification, perform above ground exercise.
V. Walk around inspection and grease machine
VI. Replace a cutting edge
VII. Set up and operate backhoe, pushing off dipper and bucket to move backhoe.
VIII. Backfill, wheel compact, and back drag.
IX. Set up and operate backhoe to dig a trench 4` deep and 40` long.
X Dig under and over an obstacle. Create a land bridge.
XI. Operate front-end loader to scoop dirt and load trucks.
