STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Given lab projects, the student will :
A. Exhibit skill in sharpening basic cutting tools.
B. Design and lay out scroll patterns.
C. Cut engraving patterns with the hammer and chisel.
D. Identify quality engraving.
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Hand engraving tools: chasing hammers, graver holders, push graver holders, graver blanks, liners, ruby stone, engraving vises, misc. tools and supplies
A. Graver sharpening
B. Basic cutting with hammer and chisel
C. Project work ¿ tool sharpening and use of hammer and chisel to cut straight lines, arcs and circles.
II. Basic cutting with a push graver
A. Project work ¿ with push graver cut straight lines, arcs, circles.
III. Spiral types: True spirals, holding spirals
A. Project work ¿ using hammer and chisel - cut straight line borders and left and right spirals.
IV. Parts of a leaf : Sweeps, Buds and Lobes
A. Seven leaf measurements; leaf height, stem thickness, sweep height, bud height, leaf meter, leaf width, leaf separation
B. Project work ¿ Using hammer and chisel, layout and cut basic American scroll with flares, buds and lobes and record the seven measurements.
V. Construction scroll
A. Project work - design, lay and cut with hammer and chisel two overlade scrolls.
VI. Line emphasis: Cant and varying depth
A. Types of emphasis cuts: Tapered cut, double tapered cut, diamond cuts, nick cuts, half- round cuts, sweeps, and reverse sweep cuts
B. Cutting borders
C. Project work - layout and cut, using hammer and chisel, borders presented with a straight line border.
VII. Shading techniques: lining tools, shading with a liner, shading with a spitzer, and shading with dots
A. Shading parts of scroll
B. Project work ¿ using a hammer and chisel, cut basic liner cuts as presented with a straight line border.
VIII. Backgrounds; Relieved and Non Relieved
A. Project work - cut basic American scroll, shade and background.
IX. Engraving screw heads
A. Project work ¿ using a hammer and chisel, cut two screw heads with presented pattern
X Pattern design: Establish master outline, establish panel, determine type of scroll, origination point, branching origins, spontaneous origins, standoff, draw scroll
A. Project work - Drawing - Design a scroll pattern to fit a 1 x 3 right triangle.
XI. Pattern transferring techniques; Transfer plate, drawing on the firearm
A. Work holding methods
1. Project work ¿ Ink pull selected pattern and cut with hammer and chisel.
XII. Pattern design English scroll, Germanic scroll, American scroll
A. Project work ¿ Drawing - layout and design two scroll patterns of two different styles on a 1¿ X 3¿ triangle.
XIII. Wire inlay
A. Repair incised lines
B. Historical perspective
C. Project work ¿ Cut and inlay pattern as presented in class
XIV. Cutting animals: transparency transfer, transfer plate
A. Project work ¿ Using transparency, transfer and cut the animal as presented in class complete with shading.
XV. Final Project ¿ On selected work pieces, design, transfer, and cut selected pattern.
