STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Describe the structure of the NRA Personal Protection Course Outline and Lesson Plans.
2. Explain NRA policies on safety procedures, course length, required materials, and teaching methods to be followed when conducting an NRA Personal Protection Course.
3. Explain the parts and demonstrate the operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols using NRA lesson plans to the satisfaction of the course instructor.
4. Demonstrate methods to teach the NRA fundamental rules of safe gun handling to the satisfaction of the course instructor and conduct a
safe handgun handling practical exercise.
5. Demonstrate how to teach ammunition components, types, and the firing sequence of a cartridge using NRA lesson plans to the satisfaction of the course instructor.
6. Explain the importance of determining eye dominance in beginning pistol shooters, and conduct an eye dominance exercise.
7. Demonstrate how to teach the six fundamentals of pistol shooting using NRA lesson plans to the satisfaction of the course instructor.
8. Describe the NRA eight-step method for training beginning pistol shooters.
9. Explain basic range safety procedures, range commands, and shooting safety rules.
10. Demonstrate methods used to teach students how to shoot a pistol from various positions using the NRA instructional method to the satisfaction of the course instructor.
11. Demonstrate how to care for and clean a pistol, and conduct a pistol cleaning practical exercise to the satisfaction of the course instructor.
12. Explain the basic guidelines for selecting a pistol.
13. Explain how to provide feedback in a positive manner.
14. Discuss ways to improve the performance of beginning pistol shooters.
15. Explain the role of examinations in the training process.
