STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. State the goal of the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course.
2. Describe the structure of the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course Outline and Lesson Plans.
3. Explain NRA policies on safety procedures, course length, required materials, and teaching methods to be followed when
conducting an NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course.
4. Demonstrate the parts and operation of revolvers and semi-automatic pistols and safe gun handling using NRA lesson plans to
the satisfaction of the course instructor.
5. Conduct a safe pistol handling practical exercise.
6. Demonstrate ammunition components, types, and the firing sequence of a cartridge; and ammunition identification, storage, and malfunctions
utilizing NRA lesson plans to the satisfaction of the course instructor.
7. Explain the importance of concentration for the success of beginning pistol shooters.
8. Describe the NRA eight-step method for training beginning pistol shooters.
9. Describe the coach/pupil method and ball and dummy technique and explain the value of using them in the training process.
10. Explain basic range safety procedures, range commands, and shooting safety rules.
11. Demonstrate to students to shoot a pistol from the benchrest position using the NRA instructional method to the satisfaction of
the course instructor.
12. Explain to students how to care for and clean a pistol, and conduct a pistol cleaning practical exercise to the satisfaction
of the course instructor.
13. Demonstrate to students how to shoot a pistol from the two-handed standing and one-handed standing positions using the NRA instructional
method to the satisfaction of the course instructor.
14. Explain to students the basic guidelines for selecting a pistol.
15. Explain the definition, purpose, and process of evaluating beginning pistol shooters and discuss ways to improve the performance
of beginning pistol shooters.
16. Explain the role of examinations in the training process.
17. Explain the role of student evaluations in instructor development.
