STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Explain NRA policies on safety procedures, course length, required materials, and teaching methods to be followed when conducting an NRA Home Firearm Safety Course.
2. Discuss the importance of firearm safety and NRA gun safety rules.
3. Explain parental responsibilities as they relate to teaching their children about gun safety.
4. Explain how to identify and unload rifles, pistols, and shotguns of various action types.
5. Conduct a safe gun handling practical exercise according to NRA lesson plans.
6. Teach a sample lesson on ammunition components, types, compatibility with firearms, and the firing sequence of ammunition using NRA lesson plans.
7. Demonstrate and teach and procedures for the safe and proper cleaning of firearms.
8. Teach guidelines for safe firearm storage.
9. Explain the role of student evaluations in instructor development.
10. Use positive feedback to improve student motivation and performance.
11. Apply to the National Rifle Association for Home Firearm Safety Instructor certification.
