STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Identify the major parts of a handgun and demonstrate how they function.
2. Identify the rules for safe gun handling.
3. Demonstrate how to handle guns in a safe manner.
4. Identify handgun ammunition components and their function.
5. Identify the proper handgun ammunition and its intended use.
6. Identify and demonstrate the fundamentals of shooting a handgun.
7. Demonstrate the knowledge, skill, and attitude necessary to shoot a handgun on the range.
8. Shoot a target from the bench rest position using the fundamentals of firing the shot.
9. Identify materials needed to clean a handgun.
10. Demonstrate how to clean a handgun safely.
11. Demonstrate the knowledge, skill, and attitude necessary to shoot a handgun from the two-handed standing, point-shoulder, and one-handed standing positions.
12. Identify the criteria for selecting a handgun.
13. Identify ways to develop and maintain shooting skills.
14. Discuss laws pertaining to the purchase, ownership, transportation, use, and possession of handguns.
15. Discuss laws pertaining to the use of a firearm for self-defense.
