Course Description: | Introduces the student to the basics of scrimshaw. Focuses on selection and preparation of the medium, layout, and execution of various scrimshaw designs. Covers synthetic ivory, bone, antler and assorted synthetic materials. Students work with micarta and other materials. Special artistic ability or experience is NOT needed to succeed in this class. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Upon completion of this course students shall demonstrate an understanding of scrimshaw skills. Students in this course will consult with the instructor to select projects/tasks that will be completed to the satisfaction of the instructor. Given performance tests, the student will perform these tasks with a score of 75% or better:
A. Explain use and selection of tools for scrimshaw.
B. Explain and/or demonstrate how to sharpen and make tools for scrimshaw.
C. Select, prepare, and polish ivory or other scrimshaw materials.
D. Transfer artwork and designs to scrimshaw material.
E. Cut designs and patterns using the line method, crosshatch.
F. Use the dot and combination methods.
G. Ink designs.
H. Discuss and/or demonstrate color scrimshaw.
I. Discuss scrimshaw material sources, books and magazines.
J. Discuss how to scrimshaw pistol grips and knife handles.
K. Discuss how to scrimshaw belt buckles, bolos and jewelry.
L. Discuss how to scrimshaw powder horns.
