  Course Description:Provides students with the opportunity to experience geology in a field setting, apply geologic principles, and complete in-depth studies of the specific geologic features and history of an area of geologic interest. A field trip lasting between seven and fourteen days is the highlight of the course. The specific area of investigation is indicated in the schedule of classes each time the course is offered. Trips may be within or outside of the United States.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Take detailed and organized field notes.
 2. Participate in field studies in an outdoor setting.
 3. Practice field data collection methods.
 4. Apply concepts and facts learned in a classroom setting to a specific field location.
 5. Recognize the rocks and minerals in the area of study and describe how each formed.
 6. Identify and describe the geologic processes and the geologic history responsible for the features encountered on the trip.
 7. Synthesize and interpret information gathered on the field trip.
 
 


 TOPICAL OUTLINE:
 
 A more specific outline will vary depending on the field site and course emphasis.  However, the following will be covered each time the course is offered.
 
 I.  Pre-trip activities/preparation for the geology that students will encounter on the trip
  a.  Earth materials (rocks, minerals, sediment)
  b.  Geologic landforms/features present in the field area
 c.  Geologic processes at work in the field area
  c.  Geologic history of the field area
  d.  Training in field techniques to be used on the trip
 II. Extended field trip to an area of geologic interest.
  a.   Field studies conducted at the field site
  b.   Taking field notes
  c.   Data collection
 III. Post-trip activities in which students synthesize information gathered on the trip
