Course Description: | Seeks to uncover the building blocks, personal decisions, and practices
that make up the craft of editing. Introduces contemporary applications of rhythm, pace, structure, and general
rules of thumb for cutting and examines the historical development of the craft. Students
analyze the storytelling techniques of master editors in a variety of
genres to help them in the discovery of their own editorial voice. |

A. Discern different editorial techniques appropriate for different genres of film/video projects
B. Study techniques for various genres of narrative films used in the present, and in history.
C. Learn the use of motivated editing technique
D. Learn to enhance the story telling with proper editing techniques
E. Learn when to use closeups, two shots, wide angles and why
A. Watch narrative film, and discuss a shot breakdown of how the editor put the story together.
B. Watch historical films then discuss shot breakdowns, and how the development of technique has changed over time and discussion of why it changed.
C. Watch documentary film, and note the difference in technique used by the storytelling editor and how his role also becomes one of a writer
D. Discussions of TV spots, and editorial technique used in them
E. Discussion of the editor¿s role in the production process
a. Editor¿s role in narrative projects
b. Editor¿s role in documentary projects
c. Editor¿s role in instructional projects
d. Editor¿s role in commercial projects
F. Bringing yourself into the edit.
G. Understanding goals of the project and how that may affect the edit decisions
H. Discuss the student¿s favorite movies, and discover why they like them
a. Watch the films, and discuss the editorial technique used in them
