Course Description: | Students will explore some of the major themes and currents in filmmaking from around the globe during the past 40 years including differences between local traditions and transnational industrial and artistic practices, forces of globalization on a culture and its films, and historical and cultural context of the production and reception of individual films. Students will explore the concepts of global cinema, first, second, and third cinema, third-world cinema, and counter cinema. |

A. Students will become active viewers of films (specifically, contemporary global cinema) rather than passive viewers.
B. Students will be able to describe the subliminal technical inputs that create meaning and significance for the audience.
C. Students will be able to describe how these films work within their larger contemporary societies.
A. Major themes and currents of filmmaking from around the globe for the last 40 years
1. Define global cinema, first, second, and third cinema, third-world cinema, and counter cinema.
2. Describe the differences between local traditions and transnational industrial and artistic practices, especially with transnational coproductions
3. Explain the forces of globalization on a culture and its films
4. Describe the historical and cultural context of the production and reception of individual films
5. Describe the place of insiders versus outsiders within a given culture
6. Explain the ways in which we, as outsiders to these cultures, interact with and interpret their films
7. List the key differences between a given culture¿s mainstream cinema and their counter cinema
8. Write a one-shot analysis from film produced in another culture
9. Co-develop with small student group a group presentation of a scene from a film from another culture
