Course Description: | Provides an overview, history, and examination of science fiction
movies, the ultimate "what if" films. Students will analyze films from a
variety of perspectives: drama, history, culture, and film aesthetics
and techniques. The approach will be by sub-genre, i.e. space travel,
time travel, etc. |

¿ From screenings and clips, write about the films and practice critical impressions and opinions both orally and written.
¿ Participate in a combination of activities such as group projects, quizzes, handouts, papers, attendance, tests, and participation.
¿ Learn about basics of historic context that the films were produced in, especially in the case of Cold War America.
1. Introduction to film: including intro to science-fiction as literary genre; basic filmmaking styles (e.g. special effects) common to genre; early influence of European sci-fi on Hollywood productions; relationship of ¿science¿ to genre; Cold War America; and evolution of genre in contemporary era, incorporating horror elements.
2. Selection of films, from Melies to Metropolis and explosion of low-budget Hollywood sci-fi films in 1950s; and growth of genre into ¿A-list blockbusters¿ of 1970s and 1980s.
3. Film reviews, especially tracking influence of classic sci-fi on contemporary directors such as Steven Spielberg.
4. Viewing journal and examinations, drawing on class discussions and lectures.
