¿ Develop an outlook for their own future productions that will build onto the base of exposure to the many styles of films screened in this class.
¿ Write about the films and practice impressions and opinions both orally and written; periodic examinations.
¿ Learn basics of historic context(s) that the films were produced in.
1. Introduction to film, including key film concepts; historic context of Italy in late 1940s and France in late 1950s; and production history;
Utilization of locations, non-professional casting, improvised techniques.
2. Selection of films, such as Bicycle Thieves, Rome, Open City, Breathless, Jules and Jim, Hiroshima Mon Amour; supplemented by re-screened clips.
3. Film reviews, particularly vis-à-vis Hollywood style and introduction of period reviews from figures such as Andre Bazin.
4. Viewing journal and examination (s), drawing on lectures and class discussions.
