STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. After completion of this course students will explain the hazards associated with hazardous materials response; laws and standards associated with the storage and transportation of hazardous materials; the use of reference materials associated with identification of hazardous materials; basic chemical interactions; safety during response and operation at hazardous materials incidents. Student will also explain operations, command, communications, and decision-making at hazardous materials incidents. Student will meet standards as set forth in NFPA 472, Operations.
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Students will explain the hazards associated with large hazardous materials response.
II. Students will explain the laws and standards associated with hazardous materials handling and storage.
III. Students will reference hazardous products in identified reference sources and materials.
IV. Students will explain the hazards associated with the interaction of identified chemical products and identify methods of containing and controlling of those emergency incidents.
V. Students will explain the components of a hazardous materials response team and resources required to manage an incident.
VI. Students will demonstrate the application of the incident command system at hazardous materials incidents.
