Course Description: | Provides the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) student with the knowledge and skills required to modify the assessment, treatment, and transportation of special patient populations and patients in special circumstances. This course also provides an overview of incident command, mass casualty incidents, vehicle extrication, air medical support, hazardous materials, and terrorism. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Identify the anatomy and physiology of reproduction and the changes that occur in normal pregnancy, labor, and delivery.
2. Discuss common pregnancy and delivery complications.
3. Demonstrate the steps to assist in the delivery and care of a newborn.
4. Discuss the EMT’s role in the prevention of infant and childhood morbidity and mortality from acute illness and injury.
5. Identify key growth and developmental characteristics of infants and children and their implications in emergency care.
6. Demonstrate the assessment and management of common pediatric ailments.
7. Discuss the psychosocial aspects of aging.
8. Recognize the changes in the different body systems that occur over time.
9. Explain the modifications necessary when assessing a geriatric patient.
10. Identify patients at risk for abuse and neglect.
11. Discuss the legal aspects and reporting requirements for patients with possible abuse or neglect.
12. Describe the accommodations that may be needed to manage an extremely obese patient.
13. Describe the modifications that may be needed in the assessment and treatment of technology dependent patients.
14. List the stages of the grief process and discuss how they relate to the care of a terminally ill patient.
15. Identify risks and responsibilities of safely operating a ground ambulance.
16. Identify the role the EMT plays in relationship to incident command, mass casualty incidents, vehicle extrication, aeromedical support, hazardous materials, and terrorism disaster.
17. Perform triage in a mass casualty incident.
18. Demonstrate how to properly extricate a simulated patient from various types of vehicles and various positions within vehicles.
19. Establish a safe landing zone for aeromedical support.
20. Discuss the importance of appropriate personal protective equipment when responding to a potentially hazardous scene.
