  Course Description:Focuses on preventive maintenance of heavy duty truck & equipment hydraulic and pneumatic brake systems, including recording of critical information for the customer. Enables students to grasp the importance of preventive maintenance while gaining an understanding of component operation.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES
 
 1. Check and record air governor cut-in and cut-out setting pressures (psi).
 2. Check operation of air reservoir/tank drain valve, drain air tanks and check for contamination.
 3. Test one-way and double-check valves.
 4. Check low air pressure warning devices.
 5. Check emergency (spring) brake control/modulator valve, if applicable.
 6. Test air pressure build-up time, and check air system for leaks, brakes released and applied.
 7. Inspect coupling air lines, holders, gladhands, and tractor protection valve.
 8. Check brake chambers and air lines for secure mounting and damage.
 9. Check operation of air drier.
 10. Inspect and record brake shoe/pad condition, thickness, and contamination. (hydraulic and air systems)
 11. Inspect and record condition of brake drums/rotors. (air and hydraulic systems)
 12. Check antilock brake system wiring, connectors, seals, and harnesses for damage and proper routing. (air and hydraulic systems)
 13. Check operation and adjustment of brake automatic slack adjusters (ASA); check and record push rod stroke.
 14. Lubricate all brake component grease fittings.
 15. Check condition and operation of hand brake (trailer) control valve.
 16. Perform antilock brake system (ABS) operational system self-test.
 17. Check condition of pressure relief (safety) valves.
 18. Inspect brake calipers, lines, fittings, flexible hoses, and valves for leaks and damage (air and hydraulic systems).
 19. Check parking brake operation; inspect parking brake application and holding devices; adjust as needed. (air and hydraulic systems)
 20. Check master cylinder fluid level/condition, and operation of hydraulic system: (pedal travel, pedal effort, and pedal feel).
 21. Inspect brake assist system (booster), hoses and control valves; check reservoir fluid level and condition.
