  Course Description:Focuses on preventive maintenance of heavy duty truck & equipment drivetrains and steering systems including recording of critical information for the customer. Enables students to grasp the importance of preventive maintenance while gaining an understanding of component operation.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Check operation of clutch, clutch brake, gearshift, clutch adjustment, adjust as needed.
 2. Check clutch linkage/cable for looseness or binding, if applicable.
 3. Check hydraulic clutch slave and master cylinders, lines, fittings, and hoses, if applicable.
 4. Check transmission case, axle housing(s), breathers, seals, filter, hoses, and cooler for cracks, leaks, and condition.
 5. Check transmission and drive axle(s) oil level, breather, mounts, oil type, and condition.
 6. Inspect U-joints, yokes, driveshafts, boots/seals, center bearings, and mounting hardware for looseness, damage, and proper phasing.
 7. Lubricate all drive train, suspension, and steering grease fittings.
 8. Change transmission and drive axle(s) oil and filter/screen, if applicable; check and clean magnetic plugs.
 9. Check transmission wiring, connectors, seals, and harnesses for damage and proper routing.
 10. Check interaxle differential lock, and range shift operation. .
 11. Check power steering pump, gear, mounting, and hoses for leaks, condition, secure mounting, and routing; check fluid level,
     change power steering fluid and filter.
 12. Inspect steering wheel, steering shaft U-joints, pinch bolts, splines, pitman arm-to-steering sector shaft, tie rod ends, and linkages
     for proper operation, free play or binding.
 13. Check kingpins, and wheel bearings for looseness and wear.
 14. Check oil level and condition in all non-drive hubs; check for leaks.
 15. Inspect springs, pins, hangers, shackles, spring U-bolts, insulators, and shock absorbers for leaks, secure mounting, and condition.
 16. Inspect air suspension springs, mounts, hoses, valves, linkage, and fittings for leaks and damage.
 17. Check and record suspension ride height.
 18. Check axle locating components (radius, torque, and/or track rods).
 19. Inspect tires for cuts, cracks, bulges, wear patterns, sidewall damage and proper mounting.
 20. Measure and record air pressure, tread depth, and imbedded debris, adjust air pressure in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.
 21. Check wheel mounting hardware condition, tire matching on single and dual tire installations, and determine needed action.
 22. Inspect valve caps and stems, wheels for cracks, damage and proper hand hold alignment, replace as needed.
 23. Inspect fifth wheel mounting, bolts, air lines, and locks and test operation of fifth wheel locking device; adjust if necessary.
 24. Check quarter fenders, mud flaps, and brackets, frame and frame members for cracks and damage.
 25. Check pintle hook assembly and mounting, lubricate all fifth wheel grease and plate, if applicable
