  Course Description:Enables the student to perform preventive maintenance on heavy equipment and truck cab and electrical systems, and complete appropriate maintenance records. Addresses the process of diagnostics and troubleshooting. Focuses on the importance of preventive maintenance.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 1. Retrieve engine monitoring information using electronic service tool(s) or on-board diagnostic system; check and record diagnostic codes
    and trip/operational data (including engine, transmission, ABS, and other systems).
 2. Check operation of electric/air horns and reverse warning devices.
 3. Check condition of spare fuses, triangles, fire extinguisher, and all required decals.
 4. Inspect seat belts, seats, and sleeper restraints, condition, operation, and mounting.
 5. Check wipers, washer, wiper blades & arms, condition and operation.
 6. Inspect windshield, door glass, and sun visor for cracks, discoloration, and operation.
 7. Inspect steps, grab handles, mirrors, mountings, brackets.
 8. Record all observed physical damage.
 9. Inspect and lubricate all cab, door, and hood hinges, latches, strikers, lock cylinders, safety latches, linkages, and cables.
 10. Inspect cab mountings, hinges, latches, linkages and ride height; service as needed.
 11. Check operation and condition of all accessories, HVAC system controls and monitoring system.
 12. Inspect A/C condenser and lines for condition and visible leaks; check mountings.
 13. Check HVAC air inlet filters and ducts; service as needed.
 14. Inspect battery hold-downs, box (es), cover(s), mountings, connections, cables, and cable routing; service as needed.
 15. Check/record battery state-of-charge (open circuit voltage), capacity (load and/or capacitance), and condition.
 16. Engage starter; check for unusual noises, starter drag, and starting difficulty.
 17. Inspect alternator, and starter, mountings, connections, cable, wiring, and wiring routing; determine needed action.
 18. Perform alternator output tests.
 19. Check operation of all interior, and exterior lights, lenses, reflectors, and conspicuity tape, headlight alignment; determine needed action.
 20. Inspect and test tractor-to-trailer multi-wire connector(s), cable(s), and holder(s); determine needed action.
