STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Use knowledge of basic nutrition requirements to identify high risk groups and individuals.
II. List drugs commonly used by these high risk groups and individuals.
III. State generic and brand names for commonly used drugs.
IV. Predict nutritional deficiency based on drugs mode of action.
V. Discuss how drugs effect food intake: increasing appetite, decreasing appetite, nausea, and bulking effect
VI. Identify drugs that increase nutrient absorption.
VII. Practice assessing patient chart information.
VIII. Demonstrate ability to distinguish assessment parameters that may be altered by drug consumption.
IX. Demonstrate knowledge of how drugs and nutrients are absorbed.
X Identify factors which alter the bio-availability of key nutrients and drugs.
XI. Discuss how a nutrient might inhibit or enhance the absorption of a specific drug.
XII. Identify the drug effect of nutrients taken as supplements.
XIII. Demonstrate knowledge of how drugs and nutrients are excreted.
XIV. Identify factors which alter the excretion of key nutrients and drugs.
XV. Identify high risk groups and individuals.
XVI. Apply knowledge of drug/diet interaction when reading patient charts to predict adverse reactions.
XVII. Write sample prescription guidelines.
XVIII. Develop a system of checks and balances to be used by a health care team which decreases the likelihood of drug/diet interaction.
XIX. Acquire skills necessary to counsel medicated patients.
