Enables the student to make correlation between the case study and application of nutritional interventions in real life patients at the work site. Focuses on special instruction on nutritional assessment to prepare for performing similar tasks in a clinical setting. Increases awareness of textbook verses actual disease states.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Perform nutritional assessment of classmate
 II.     Perform nutritional assessment of clinical patient
 III.    Determine when supplementation or total parenteral nutrition is needed (TPN)
 IV.     Determine when drug therapy may necessitate diet changes
 V.      Discuss dietary modifications for fever and infections
 VI.     Present a case study in nutritional support for:  the surgery patient and the burn patient.
 VII.    Discuss nutritional problems of dysphagia
 VIII.   Present a case study in nutritional support for:  hiatal hernia, gastric exclusion, and dumping syndrome.
 IX.     Discuss problems of diverticulosis
 X       Prepare a case study in nutritional support for:  malabsorption syndromes, inflammatory bowel disease, and celiac disease
 XI.     Discuss dietary treatment of gall bladder disease
 XII.    Present a case study of nutritional support for:  liver disease and pancreatic disease.

Prepare a mini-case study of hospital patient on therapeutic diet for one of the disease states in 2.2 to 2.11:  etiology and pathogenesis of disease, nutritional assessment, computerized diet analysis, and site appropriate documentation/ assessment /analysis for use as defense in a malpractice suit as
 XXIX.   appropriate for their placement.
