 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Discuss the historical evidence which supports the importance of good perinatal care.
 II.     Use knowledge of basic nutrition to evaluate various meal patterns.
 III.    List important aspects of nutrition for pregnancy.
 IV.     Write specific menu ideas for woman suffering morning sickness or consti- pation.
 V.      Apply knowledge of Gestational Diabetes:  analyze 3 hour GTT results, state how high blood sugar effects the mother and the fetus, and Describe how caffeine, tobacco, alcohol and drugs affect the infant when consumed during pregnancy.
 VI.     Demonstrate how to properly breast-feed.
 VII.    List pros and cons of breast-feeding both for the mother and the infant.
 VIII.   Anticipate potential problems with breast-feeding and offer solutions.
 IX.     Describe how caffeine, tobacco, alcohol and drugs affect the infant during lactation.
 X       Demonstrate how to properly bottle-feed.
 XI.     List pros and cons of bottle-feeding both for the mother and the infant.
 XII.    Anticipate potential problems with bottle-feeding and offer solutions.
 XIII.   Analyze various infant feeding products.
 XIV.    Determine caloric requirements for normal growth as affected by:  health status, activity level, BMR, age, and sex.
 XV.     Determine specific nutrient needs for adequate growth.
 XVI.    Describe successful weaning.
 XVII.   Identify when and how to introduce various solid foods.
 XVIII.  Give characteristics of several child care food programs.
 XIX.    Discuss psychological, physical and behavioral changes occurring at this stage of development.
 XX      Select those foods most appealing to toddlers from a random list.
 XXI.    Practice how to make nutrient dense meals for toddlers.
 XXII.   Discuss how to avoid battles over food acceptance and make mealtime pleasant for the parents and the toddler.
 XXIII.  Discuss feeding responsibilities of:  parent/caregiver and child
 XXIV.   Observe an infant toddler lab at feeding time:  make an oral report to class on observation
 XXV.    Define a premature infant.
 XXVI.   Define a LBW infant.
 XXVII.  Identify strategies to aid parents in feeding LBW or premature infants.
 XXVIII. State specific nutritional needs of the LBW and premature infant.
 XXIX.   Discuss pressures to be thin.
 XXX     Discuss physical consequences of obesity.
