  Course Description:Provides a general overview of the concepts and theory relative to dental hygiene education. Students will be introduced to dental hygiene accreditation standards, outcomes centered objectives, syllabus development, lesson planning, content delivery, test construction and assessing student learning. Students will explore the various learning styles and technology available for delivery of course content.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES
 
 1. Construct outcome centered learning objectives for a dental hygiene course by incorporating Lumina Foundation and
        Bloom’s taxonomy learning-centered framework.
 2. Investigate and illustrate the necessary components of a dental hygiene course syllabus and determine where and how
        accreditation standards are incorporated.
 3. Produce a lesson plan that will be used to deliver a dental hygiene unit lecture.
 4. Generate an evaluation tool using previously created objectives to assess student learning.
 5. Compare and contrast instructional best practices that promote effective teaching and student learning.
 6. Prepare a lecture utilizing various types of technology available for delivery of course content.

 I. Create outcome centered learning objectives
     A. Investigate Lumina and Bloom’s taxonomy learning-centered framework
     B. Determine Commission on Dental Accreditation standards and how they are incorporated into program outcomes
     C. Identify the essential components of creating learning objectives
 II. Construct a syllabus incorporating the essential components as determined by an institution and accreditation
     A. Investigate different syllabi templates and devise a checklist to ensure all components are included
     B. Identify requirements to be included in each common course syllabi as determined by the state community college system
 III. Generate a lesson plan that will be used to prepare and deliver a unit lecture
     A. Determine the necessary learning objectives
     B. Identify instructional delivery options
     C. Investigate assessment methods
     D. Discuss resources and materials available for incorporation
     E. Provide the evaluation mechanisms that will be used to assess student learning
 IV. Research instructional best practices
     A. Explore instructional delivery options
     B. Investigate “Good” practices used in teaching
     C. Determine the necessary characteristics of an effective teacher
     D. Discuss principles used in adult education
