  Title:Clinical Theory III
  Long Title:Clinical Theory of Dental Hygiene III
  Course Description:Serves as the capstone course of the final semester of a two-year curriculum. Prepares the student for two major goals: basic competence for transition to provision of dental hygiene services in private practice; and the ability to successfully pass both written National Boards examinations and regional dental hygiene clinical examinations. Emphasizes the application of case based learning. Major topics include: cosmetic bleaching, air powered polishing devices, application of the re-evaluation process in treatment planning for periodontally involved cases, preparation for the CRDTS regional clinical exam process, application of an effective tobacco cessation process, technique and process for gingival curettage, technique and process for amalgam polishing and margination, care of cosmetic dental restorations, and maintenance of implants.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Describe the indications and contraindications for providing cosmetic bleaching.
 II.     Describe the indications and contraindications for air polishing; list the step by step process for using air polishing devices including asepsis and aerosol control and minimizing microabrasion of tissues.
 III.    Given documented cases, apply the dental hygiene process of care and successfully complete multiple choice question testlets for each case.
 IV.     Given regional board clinical testing process and information, identify strategies for radiographic and debridement patient selection; provide definitions for dental terminology as used in the testing format, describe effective and accurate use of Boards forms, and select appropriate techniques for managing the testing environment.
 V.      Describe the appropriate use of the re-evaluation process in the overall process of care for clients with periodontally involved initial therapy.
 VI.     Given examples of effective tobacco cessation strategies, provide examples for application in clinical practice.
 VII.    List the indications, contraindications, limited support in research, and basic technique for closed gingival curettage.( move, delete or generalize statement) we do this in fall semester.
 VIII.   List the indications, contraindications and process for amalgam polishing and margination on functional restorations. (move or delete)
 IX.     Describe the key factors for effective and safe maintenance of cosmetic restorations.
 X       List the types of implants; for each describe the primary considerations necessary for safe and appropriate care during dental hygiene therapy and by the patient during home care efforts.
