Focuses on clinical competence in margination and polishing of restorations, nutrition counseling, oral irrigation, chemotherapeutics and OSHA compliance. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Identify and treat periodontally involved patients including
II. assessment, dental hygiene treatment planning, consultation
III. with the dentist, treatment and re-evaluation of that patient.
IV. Develop and expand skills in self-critique of clinical skills and begin development of problem-solving, as demonstrated in treatment planning and patient management.
V. Use radiographs to identify periodontal defects, complete perio charting, apply to dental hygiene treatment plan and identify other conditions on radiographs requiring dentist referral.
VI. Provide nutritional counseling and incorporate the procedure into the preventive patient education plan.
VII. Demonstrate application of advanced periodontal hand instruments in prescribed periodontal treatment conditions
VIII. Demonstrate effective use of advanced powered scaler instrumentation.
IX. Recognize the indications/contraindications for amalgam polishing, margination and application of chemotherapeutics agents with oral irrigation.
X Demonstrate application of intraoral photography to patient education and assessment.
XI. Demonstrate dental hygiene treatment for prescribed levels of difficulty within predetermined time and skill parameters
XII. Demonstrate a working knowledge of soft tissue curettage, when necessary, on clinical patients, utilizing topical and/or local anesthetic when indicated for patient comfort.
XIII. Assemble, explain and demonstrate the use of the prophy jet.
XIV. Identify and treatment plan and effectively apply sealants
XV. Provide oral hygiene instruction according to patient individual needs
XVI. Demonstrate and practice the principles of sound dental
XVII. ergonomics
TOPICAL OUTLINE:
I. Topics depend on patient population at educational site, but do include patient requirements for light, moderate, and heavy patients and auxiliary procedures related to competencies.
