Course Description: | Provides the didactic theory for clinical practice of dental hygiene skills at the beginning of the second year of dental hygiene curriculum. Builds on clinic theory from first year curriculum to provide the knowledge base needed for treatment of patients with more advanced periodontal disease and medical/health factors. Focuses on: periodontal charting and documentation, interpretation of periodontal factors on radiographs, use of treatment planning in the dental hygiene process of care, legal parameters of record keeping and informed consent, use of oral photography, application of sealants, treatment of dental hypersensitivity, application of chemotherapeutics and professional oral irrigation, application of ergonomics in dentistry, clinical dental hygiene treatment considerations for patients with history of cardiac complications and diabetes. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Identify the components and clinical use of a comprehensive periodontal assessment record including charting, radiographs, and patient self care history.
II. Apply the Dental Hygiene Process of Care to treatment planning and progress notes documentation.
III. Describe the legally required parameters for record keeping in dental care.
IV. List the necessary parameters for informed consent and describe an effective process for application of informed consent.
V. Describe the rationale for use of oral photography in documentation, patient education, motivation and case presentation / acceptance. Describe the criteria for obtaining useful intraoral photographs and criteria for specific views.
VI. For the treatment planning and application of dental sealants: describe dental materials factors; patient selection; application process; and evaluation of an effective sealant.
VII. Define causes and treatments for dental hypersensitivity.
VIII. Describe and list the indications for clinical application of chemotherapeutics in the dental hygiene process of care. List the vehicles for application of chemotherapeutics, contraindications, and techniques for professional oral irrigation.
IX. Given signal risk factors identified by OSHA for work related musculoskeletal disorders, identify corrective and preventive actions to reduce incidence and injury.
X Describe treatment considerations in the care of patients with cardiac complications.
XI. Describe dental hygiene treatment planning factors when providing care for patients with undiagnosed diabetes; poorly controlled diabetes, and controlled diabetes.
