  Course Description:Continues to explore theoretical/clinical preparations with emphasis on dental hygiene process of care, treatment planning, non-surgical treatment, evaluation of treatment, and maintenance needs of the periodontal patient. Develops research and decision making skills with use of library and Internet resources relating to risk factors, etiologic agents, and treatment modalities. Includes comprehensive periodontal assessment, supplemental diagnostics, periodontal pharmacology, and evidence based treatment planning.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Discuss the role of the dental hygienist in periodontal therapy
 II.     List the diagnostic components of the periodontal examination
 III.    Analyze assessment data and formulate appropriate treatment plan, documenting patient needs and dental hygiene interventions
 IV.     Discuss the evidence-based approach to treatment planning.
 V.      Describe factors related to determining a periodontal prognosis
 VI.     Describe the phases of periodontal therapy
 VII.    Define supportive periodontal maintenance (SPT) and relate all aspects of determining treatment parameters
 VIII.   Discuss the relationship of hormones and medications with periodontal diseases
 IX.     Evaluate the role of using adjunctive diagnostic aids in periodontics
 X       Understand the importance of systemic diseases as modifiers.
 XI.     Discuss the rationale for the use of chemical agents in the treatment of the inflammatory periodontal diseases
 XII.    List and discuss the various types of drug delivery systems and enzyme suppression therapy.
