Particular emphasis is placed on the interaction between periodontal pathogens and the host response, and the effects of systemic conditions on periodontal health are explored, as well as the effects of periodontal disease on systemic health. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
1. Discuss the continuum of health to disease, and the various aspects of the relationship between health, disease, and the immune response.
2. Demonstrate understanding of the inflammatory and immune responses, especially as they relate to periodontal health.
3. Discuss bacterial characteristics that contribute to their virulence.
4. Identify systemic and genetic risk factors for periodontal disease.
