  Course Description:Focuses on the fundamentals of general pathology and the disease process. Covers oral pathology with emphasis on recognition and identification of pathologic conditions that most frequently occur around the oral cavity. Helps students identify appropriate referral mechanisms to render a definitive diagnosis.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Describe the cellular mechanism of inflammation, neoplasia, and wound healing and recognize the influence of the immune system on these conditions.
 II.     Describe the process by which cellular disease mechanisms affect specific body organ systems.
 III.    Identify and describe the clinical manifestations of the mechanisms of inflammation, neoplasia, wound healing, and other conditions of the head and neck region.
 IV.     Recognize and give examples of HIV/AIDS related oral lesions.  Learn the etiology, prevalence, current statistics and research, and dental implications for this disease.
 V.      Distinguish among groups of symptoms such as reactive, neoplasia, infectious, and
 VI.     developmental.
 VII.    Assess and categorize clinical signs and symptoms to a level that allows a differential         diagnosis.
 VIII.   Correlate the signs and symptoms of oral abnormalities with etiologic factors.
 IX.     Describe and identify common oral lesions.
 X       Determine whether referral for definitive diagnosis is needed.
 XI.     Conduct clear and tactful discussion of clinical manifestations of disease with the dentist,
 XII.    patients, and other health professionals.
