STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Discuss concepts relating to anxiety and pain control with nitrous oxide analgesia.
II. List the indications and contraindications of nitrous oxide use.
III. Describe physical and chemical characteristics of nitrous oxide.
IV. Assess a patient¿s medical, physical and mental status to determine need for anxiety control and appropriateness of nitrous oxide use.
V. Outline safety features of nitrous oxide and oxygen for both equipment and technique.
VI. Describe complications that may occur from the use of nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation.
VII. Describe the sequence of sensations that a person may experience at different concentrations of nitrous oxide.
VIII. Administer nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation to a patient using proper techniques to include:
A. preparation of equipment
B. induction/titration
C. monitoring of patients
D. conclusion of use
IX. Explain the experience of nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation to the patient so they will have a positive and successful experience.
X List the important factors of nitrous oxide and environmental hygiene.
