  Course Description:Provides a working knowledge of the theory and practice of local anesthesia as applied to the practice of dentistry/dental hygiene. Emphasizes mastery of the armamentarium and techniques of regional anesthesia. Covers the knowledge and skills necessary to administer local anesthetics proficiently and safely.

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Identify different types of syringes, needles and anesthetic containers.
 II.     Name the different parts of the syringe, needle, and dental cartridge.
 III.    List additional components to the anesthetic armamentarium.
 IV.     Properly assemble the armamentarium.
 V.      Taking anatomical differences into consideration, demonstrate to clinical competency the different local and regional nerve block techniques.
 VI.     Explain the neurophysiologic actions of local anesthetics in the anesthetized individual.
 VII.    Explain the pharmacology of local anesthetics and vasoconstrictors.
 VIII.   Differentiate the clinical actions of specific anesthetic agents.
 IX.     Evaluate the patient¿s physical and psychological condition
 X       List local and systemic complications that could arise from use of local anesthetics.
 XI.     Describe emergencies that may occur from the administration of local anesthetics and recommended emergency response.
