  Course Description:Focuses on application of the basic sciences in maintaining healthy ~oral tissues for all patient populations. Emphasizes plaque and plaque related diseases and the basic philosophy involved in controlling and/or preventing disease. Addresses the role of the dental hygienist in etiology, epidemiology of disease, primary preventive efforts, oral health education, nutrition and dietary measures, and preventive agents.~

 STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
 
 I.      Define and discuss the differences between primary, secondary, and tertiary preventive dentistry.
 II.     Identify the relationship of plaque to caries and periodontal diseases.
 III.    Describe and integrate appropriate plaque control methods.
 IV.     Identify and discuss various aspects of communication and learning styles as it relates to patient education/motivation
 V.      Describe the effects and present uses of fluorides.
 VI.     Identify and meet the dental treatment needs of special patients.
