Course Description: | Introduces the management of emergency situations in the dental office setting. Emphasizes reduction of risk for emergencies, identification and management of anxiety, and stress recognition protocol. Provides practical skills applicable to dental hygienists and the scope of responsibility for medical emergency management as dictated by state dental practice law. Covers the basic categories of emergencies, causes and management. Includes content and use of emergency kits and oxygen support systems. |

STANDARD COMPETENCIES:
I. Given case descriptions, vital signs and sample medical histories, students can classify patients by the ASA system for level of medical risk.
II. Given level of medical risk and case examples, students can identify appropriate protocols for stress and anxiety reduction.
III. Students can describe the management procedures for loss of consciousness.
IV. Students can describe the management procedures for respiratory distress.
V. Students can describe the management procedures for altered consciousness and specific actions for both controlled and uncontrolled diabetics.
VI. Students can describe the management procedures for seizures.
VII. Students can describe the management procedures for chest pain and cardiac arrest.
VIII. Given CPR training, students can describe and apply the procedures for assessment, use of the emergency response system and basic life support.
IX. Students can list the contents of a minimum recommended emergency kit for the dental office, the appropriate use of each item or drug, and the protocols and dental practice law governing the personnel authorized to use each item or drug.
